Make your Halloween party food stand out. Impress your guests but leave them laughing with your adult take on Halloween gourmet nibbles and guts!

No doubt about it, Halloween parties are just as much fun for adults as they are for kids. The only difference might be the spiked punch and the more adult fare using salmon and brie instead of candy.

When setting up an adult Halloween party, the decorations, costumes and food all come together to set the stage. Try this party menu and entertain your guests with both sophistication and gore; a perfect Halloween night of surprises and fun.

When setting out the food, don't forget to add the names of the dishes, placed on note cards. A good way to do this is to cut out index cards in the shapes of headstones, then tape or staple them to popsicle sticks and place in front of each dish. Make sure to change the names if you alter the recipes.

Ghost of Brie with Blood

(baked brie in pastry with red jam)

Ingredients:

  • Small brie round
  • any red jam; raspberry or strawberry works well
  • puff pastry
  • 1 egg
  • olive oil cooking spray
  • cookie cutters: ghost, cat, bat

Directions:

  1. Place the brie on a plate, add enough jam on top to cover. Wrap with pastry sheet around the brie and seal edges on bottom.
  2. Save enough pastry to cut out a ghost to place on top.
  3. Brush with egg wash, place on baking tin that has been lightly sprayed with olive oil.
  4. Bake in oven at 400° for 15 minutes or until the crust is a golden brown.
  5. Serve on a plate with cheese spreader and assorted crackers. Serves 6-8

Fresh Flesh

(smoked salmon & cream cheese on crackers)

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of sliced, smoked salmon
  • 3 oz package of cream cheese
  • 36 crackers

Spread cream cheese on each cracker and top with small bits of salmon. Place on serving platter, and don't forget to place the name of the dish in the middle of the platter. Makes 36 servings.

Roadkill Remnants

(sweet & sour meatballs)

Ingredients:

  • 10-3/4 oz can of tomato soup
  • 16 oz can whole cranberries
  • 1 Tblsp grape jelly
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 lb frozen meatballs, cooked

Directions:

  1. Mix soup and cranberries in a sauce; bring to boil. Add grape jelly and lemon juice. Remove from heat and pour over meatballs. Place in a 6-qt. slow cooker on low for four hours. Makes 20-30 servings.

Severed Eyeballs

(deviled eggs)

Ingredients:

  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp coarsely ground black pepper
  • 1/3 cup mayo
  • 3 Tblsp Dijon mustard
  • red paste food coloring
  • green olives

Directions:

  1. Put the eggs in cool water and boil for 10-15 mins.
  2. Let eggs cool on counter. Peel, cut in half, scoop out yolks.
  3. Mash together the egg yolks, the salt and pepper, mayo and mustard till mixed well. Place back into egg halves.
  4. Slice olives in thin circles. Place on center of yolks. Spread red coloring in strips to mimic bloodshot eyes. Makes 12 servings.

Maggoty Snowballs

(mango-vanilla-coconut ice cream balls)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream
  • 2 ripe mangos
  • 1 pkg coconut flakes

Directions:

  1. Place ice cream container on counter for 15 mins to soften.
  2. Slice mango and mash into vanilla ice cream.
  3. Roll into balls (tennis ball size).
  4. Toast coconut flakes on baking tin until lightly browned. Place on flat plate when cooled. Roll balls in flakes and refreeze, covered. Serves 6-8.

One last reminder - if you have a punch bowl and plan on using it, be sure to make your ice cubes really stand out. Use cranberry or raspberry juice to fill several plastic gloves. Twist tie them closed at the wrists. After freezing overnight, cut the gloves off and place frozen hands in the punch.
